Tilman Riemenschneider

Sculptor and Citizen of Würzburg

Tilman Riemenschneider is a significant carver and sculptor from the German Late Gothic era. From 1485 until his death in 1531, he had a large workshop in Würzburg, which supplied Franconians beyond the city’s borders. The distribution scope of his work corresponds, remarkably, to the sphere of influence of the Würzburg Prince-Bishop.

Riemenschneider’s works include the stone statues for Würzburg’s Marienkapelle (Chapel of Mary). Adam and Eve from the Marktportal (Market Portal) are famous throughout the world. With about 80 sculptures, the Mainfränkisches Museum has the largest Riemenschneider collection in the world.

Stories about the time of origin or rediscovery of his artwork will liven up the interactive exploration of the art of the master.
