
Building.Bridges. Crossing the Main River in one hundred ways.

Without bridges there are no meetings, no exchanges, no transport and no traffic. Crossing.Bridges people, news, goods, and many stories come together. Only six bridges existed in medieval times, today there are about a hundred crossing the Main River, and their story is the theme of this exhibition. »Building.Bridges. Crossing the Main River in one hundred ways« brings together the Unterfränkische Kulturstiftung of the Bezirk Franken and the Museum für Franken in Würzburg. One used to get one's feet wet when crossing rivers but soon enough ferries carrying people, cattle and carts remedied that problem - even if it still remained dangerous at times. Only when some cities could afford building bridges from wood or stone crossing a river became an easy thing, if not a cheap one: bridge tolls were a welcome source of income and made sure necessary repairs due to floods and ice floes were made. All those passing the bridge were protected and guided by the bridge saints, monumental sculptures, to this very day. Increase in traffic, railways and major viaducts made Crossing.Bridges easier and faster - today, if you pass some extra time on one of the many Main River bridges it will be for a good reason: enjoying the sights, the works of art or a glass of Franconian wine...
