Letters of Yesteryear
What is writing? How has it developed and what materials were used for writing? A panel painting from 1485 shows medieval writing utensils. The effort of book production before the invention of the letterpress is the subject of a painting, which shows a handwritten herbarium among other things. A number of writing sets, as were common in the 18th century, can be found between many other vessels. A Baroque writing cabinet, which was produced in 1727 for a 14-year old aristocrat, finally opens its secret compartments. During the practical part of the tour, historic writing implements (stylus, reed pen, goose quill, steel nib, slate pencil) can be tried out and a Baroque letter can be drafted and sealed by the author.
